Franklin CUSD #1 is proud to announce that Mr. Braxton Stewart has been selected as the next Superintendent of Schools, beginning July 1, 2026. Mr. Stewart currently serves as the district’s PK–12 Principal, where he has quickly earned the trust of students, staff, families, and community members through his steady leadership, approachable style, and unwavering commitment to doing what is best for children.
Mr. Stewart brings a rich blend of experiences that uniquely prepare him to lead Franklin CUSD #1 into its next chapter. His career includes service as a PK–12 principal, elementary principal, dean of students, teacher for students with significant social-emotional needs, and fourth-grade classroom teacher. His leadership has been consistently described as compassionate, student-centered, data-informed, and rooted in building strong relationships. Colleagues repeatedly highlight his integrity, vision, and ability to inspire unity among staff and families.
Mr. Stewart is currently completing his Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership with superintendent licensure at Western Illinois University, where he maintains a 4.0 GPA. He also holds a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration and Leadership, a Master’s degree in Educational Policy, and an Illinois Principal Endorsement. His professional and academic preparation reflects a deep commitment to lifelong learning and a belief that great leaders must never stop growing.
Before beginning his career in education, Mr. Stewart served for more than two years in the Peace Corps in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa, where he worked in public health education, taught English to middle and high school students, and partnered with communities on maternal health, malaria prevention, and sustainable development initiatives. He describes this experience as profoundly shaping his philosophy of leadership—teaching him humility, perseverance, the importance of listening, and what it truly means to make a difference in the lives of others.
Throughout his leadership roles in Jacksonville School District #117 and now in Franklin CUSD #1, Mr. Stewart has demonstrated a consistent ability to improve school culture, strengthen instructional practices, support teachers, and build meaningful partnerships with families and community organizations. His colleagues describe him as a leader who “elevates those around him,” “leads with heart and integrity,” and “inspires confidence through both high expectations and genuine care.”
As Superintendent, Mr. Stewart looks forward to building on Franklin’s strong sense of pride and tradition while working side-by-side with staff, students, families, and the broader community. In his application letter, he shared that his lifelong goal has been to serve in a role where he can make a lasting difference, and that leading Franklin CUSD #1 would be “the greatest professional privilege of [his] life.”
